After a concussion occurs, it is important to measure how well your brain functions post-injury. Knowing this information can assist in planning an effective rehabilitation program. At the Sports Concussion Institute, we believe that a comprehensive approach to concussion management starts before the injury actually occurs. As a result, a valid Baseline Concussion Test is the first step to effective concussion management.
What is a Baseline Concussion Test? Having a Baseline Concussion Test is like having insurance. As a preventative measure, these baseline tests are typically taken prior to a sport season when an athlete has not yet had exposure to training and/or competition. In the event of a concussion is received during the season, the same test (a “post-injury”) is taken again by the athlete, yielding comparative scores from before and after the injury. These baseline tests and post-injury tests are computerized assessments that measure Reaction Time, Memory Capacity, Speed of Mental Processing, and Executive Functioning of the brain. They also record baseline concussion symptoms and provide extensive information about the athlete’s history with concussions.
Why is it Important to get “Baselined?” A Baseline Concussion Test is an important piece to concussion management. Each concussion is unique, so it is important to treat individuals on a case-by-case basis. Comparing post-injury test scores of an individual to their own baseline test scores from before the concussion is considered best practice. Without a baseline test to use for comparison, an individual’s post-injury test scores can only be compared to the general population. Whenever possible, we want to compare apples to apples, and Baseline Concussion Tests allow us to do just that. Also, because baseline testing usually occurs early in the season, the very act of getting tested will raise concussion awareness for athletes, parents, and coaches.
What is needed for a Baseline Concussion Test? The baseline tests that SCI uses are computer-based and can be taken anywhere with an internet connection under the supervision of a trained examiner. Typically, baseline tests take 30-45 minutes to administer, and can be done for both individual athletes and groups. SCI administers the most reliable concussion tests available and its staff are experts at analyzing and interpreting test scores.

Cognitive rehabilitation provides services for patients with cognitive impairments with functional improvements being the ultimate goal of treatment. This type of therapy is provided by neuropsychologists with specialized training in providing cognitive rehabilitation services. Short term and long term goals are established and are achieved by incorporating tools such as compensatory strategies or process training programs. Cognitive rehabilitation therapy takes into account factors such as personal, emotional, and social impacts of a brain injury and how it interacts with cognitive functioning. Emphasis is also placed on providing brain injury education for the patient’s family and support system in order to maximize outcomes.

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is an assessment of how a brain functions, which indirectly provides information regarding the integrity of the brain. An assessment involves a clinical interview and the administration of the tests. Tests are administered by a neuropsychologist or a trained psychometrist and are typically in a paper and pencil and computerized format. The tests evaluate functioning in areas such as: intelligence, attention, memory, language, perception, sensorimotor functions, executive functions (such as planning, reasoning, abstraction, problem solving), motivation, mood state, emotion, personality style, and quality of life. The assessment may take up to 6-8 hours and testing sessions can be broken down into shorter sessions and scheduled on different days. The areas addressed in the evaluation are determined by the referral questions (by the referring doctor), patient’s complaint of symptoms, and observations made during the interview and test administration.
How you can prepare for your neuropsychological evaluation:
• Bring a current list of ALL medications and doses.
• Bring any records of previous neurodiagnostic testing (brain scans) and results from any previous neuropsychological evaluation completed at another hospital or clinic.
• It is helpful for a family member or friend to accompany you to provide collateral information.
• Get a good night’s rest before the evaluation.
• Do not consume any alcohol 24 hours prior to the evaluation.
• If taking sleep medication, check with your doctor to see whether it may affect test performance the next day.
• Let the examiner know prior to the testing session if you are experiencing: excessive tiredness, pain, lack of motivation, emotional distress, influence of medication or illicit substances that can impact cognitive functioning, frequent changes in the ability to move.
